Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea)

Our Price: £6.99
The tallest reach 130ft (40m).
This is the dominant native oak of the less-fertile wetter northern and western upland regions of Britain. It tolerates light acid soils.
The acorns are not carried on stalks, giving it it's common English name of Sessile Oak. In contrast, the leaf-stalks of the Sessile Oak are longer than those of the Pedunculate Oak.
Oak makes excellent charcoal, a fact which led to large areas of oak being lost during the 17th century when it was harvested to use for iron smelting.
Its wood has been used in joinery and shipbuilding.
