There are a number of forms of the common juniper, which can vary from slim erect trees of up to 4m, to prostrate, sprawling shrubs. There is variation also in the rate of growth, with some junipers being much slower growing than others. The fruit of the juniper is best known as a flavouring for gin and in various other culinary uses. In medicine, its fruit has been used as a diuretic. The fruit ripen to black in their second to third year. Foliage is of needle type.
