Downy Birch

Whilst less elegant than the closely related Silver Birch, it will thrive on wetter soils making it a common component of upland native woodlands.
It differs from its relative, silver birch in lacking pendulous branches, having darker bark and downy young shoots. It is often planted to protect other young trees. Its timber is used for wood pulp and plywood. | | 6.9900 | 0.0000 | 0.0000 | 0 | 0 | Default_Item | 180 | | Downy Birch - Likes it wet | downy, birch, betula, pubescens, british, broadleaf, wet | | | | Display_Item | | BIGTREES | 0 | | 28060.jpg | 28060.jpg | images/shop_image3/default.gif | images/shop_image4/default.gif | | | 1 | Betula pubescens | | | d08270c0-517d-4665-bfc5-0deeffcd09a4 | 43e5fe39-c2a5-42fa-bdb9-a418b35cb609 | 0 | 0 | 02/05/2005 14:31:00 | 02/05/2005 00:00:00 | 11/09/2006 16:30:00 | 02/05/2005 14:37:00 | 1 | 0 | 0 | | 0 | | 0 | 0 | 02/05/2005 00:00:00 | | LIVE | 0 | | 452588 | 224899 | 28060 | 1 | None | Default | 03/11/2025 12:49:24 | BIGTREES | 6.9900 |

Common Alder
| 1 | £6.99 | £6.99 | | | 28056 | 0 | 1 | Product | BIGTREES | 0 | 0.0000 | British Natives | Broadleaf | Common Alder | 0 | | | | | | | | -1 | -1 | 0 | 0 | | | | | | | 0 | | GBT0005 | | Ideal for carvers and turners | It will grow to around 70ft (22m)
Thriving in moist to wet ground it is a common inhabitant of riverbanks, low lying areas or upland areas with high rainfall. The leaves are slow to decay if they falll into water and as such the trees should not be planted too close to riverbanks.
Nodules on roots which contain bacteria that ''fix'' nitrogen make it a valuable species for enriching poor ground.
The timber used to be used to make clogs. It dislikes chalky soil. | | 6.9900 | 0.0000 | 0.0000 | 0 | 0 | Default_Item | 180 | | Common Alder - Ideal for carvers and turners | common, alder, alnus, glutinosa | | | | Display_Item | | BIGTREES | 0 | | 28056.jpg | 28056.jpg | images/shop_image3/default.gif | images/shop_image4/default.gif | | | 1 | Alnus glutinosa | | | e398b150-61dd-4e2a-b966-f6719bd31e54 | 7b5c0ae5-9f86-42e3-a90b-955f64cc8eb1 | 0 | 0 | 02/05/2005 14:16:00 | 02/05/2005 00:00:00 | 11/09/2006 16:27:00 | 02/05/2005 14:21:00 | 1 | 0 | 0 | | 0 | | 0 | 0 | 02/05/2005 00:00:00 | | LIVE | 0 | | 452589 | 224899 | 28056 | 1 | None | Default | 03/11/2025 12:49:25 | BIGTREES | 6.9900 |
